The LCD backlight device on the MacBook Pro is listed in the Windows XP Device Manager as an "Unknown Device" with the following Device Instance ID: ACPI\APP0002\A

Because the LCD backlight shows up as an ACPI device the code found here may prove useful; it's a utility created for Linux (also ported to BSD) to control the LCD backlight on laptops with Mobility Radeon chipsets.

From blanka: "According to the code, MMIO Reg 0x2D0 controls the backlight. However, upon modification, the MMIO register remained at zero, indicating that either a) the register is unmapped or b) the register is locked down by the video initialization code"
